I’ve always loved the fact that all alien species on Star Trek speak perfect English. I think the thing that I like most about that is that I don’t have to bother with sub titles just to watch it. If I want to read, I’ll get a book, I’m watching this to be mindlessly entertained. Of course they use the excuse that they have the universal translators, but if the main goal of the Federation is to seek out new life and learn about them, then how do they already have the language in the database of the universal translator? Of course I will say this for Star Trek, it seems like Gene Roddenberry had an inside look at future technology. I remember when I thought it would be so cool to have a flip communicator that I could take with me anywhere. But even as cool as cell phones are, they still aren’t getting me to work any quicker, so let’s get on with the transporters already.
Although, I do think that a universal translator would be awesome. Sure, when the aliens come I’ll understand them just fine because they speak English, but it sure would be nice to be able to speak with other cultures here on Earth without sub titles.
