I remember growing up in a time when kids were to be seen and not heard, and it often felt like even when I had something to say nobody was listening. Not being listened to can be a lonely thing, but if you work at it, it can be fun too. I used to like to say strange things and walk out of the room. “I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Wiener, cause then everyone could just bite me.” “That’s nice dear…wait..What?!” Not to mention the freedom to do the things you want to do, and have the permission to do it. “Hey mom, I’m going to go outside and jump down the balcony stairs. But don’t worry, I’m using one of your towels as a cape, I’ll be fine.” “Okay dear, have fun.”
But in those times when you really feel like being heard, just walk around in a crowded room looking for your lost pet snake, or your missing tarantula. People will start listening to you in a hurry.
