What a weird song. I have always felt that rock a bye baby was a very strange song to put our children to sleep to. We’re painting a word picture of our child in the top of a tree during a wind storm of some kind and seemingly watching as the wind breaks the limb and our child plummets to the ground below. And then we tell them to have sweet dreams. What kind of mixed message is that?! I suppose it’s better than singing them a bedtime dirge filled with boogie men and bed bugs. But by how much really?

I guess it all has a way of coming back around to us though. Usually in the middle of the night in the form of our children waking us up with screaming nightmares. Hmmmm…go figure.
